Albanese promised to enact multinational tax measures. Nothing’s happened

Jason Ward, Principal Analyst at CICTAR, has an opinion piece published today in the independent new outlet ‘Crikey’. He discusses the lobbying, by global corporations and accountancy firms, which has resulted in delay and potential watering down of Australia’s legislation on tax transparency.

With public services in crisis, and an estimated US$5bn at stake, Jason asks if governments can afford to continue listening to the voices of vested interests?

‘(T)he time for governments to ignore these facilitators and enablers of tax dodging is long overdue. The Australian government must act in the broader community’s interests and implement full public country-by-country reporting, as it has already proposed.

It’s time to shine a bright light into the dark practices (and harmful consequences) of rampant multinational tax avoidance.’
